Welcome PM

Helpful Information for using the site.

You may want to save this message for a few weeks for reference as you get oriented.

We will have all of this posted in a forum thread too, so if you delete it by accident, don't worry about it. It's long, you're probably not going to want to read the whole thing in one sitting.

If you get locked out, need a password reset because you didn't get the automated reset emails, would like upload permissions or have any questions, concerns or whatever, please email goother at losslesslegssignup at gmail.com  The answer to life, the universe and everything is 42.

Search

Torrents link at the top of the main page. The Torrents page lists all torrents chronologically by the time stamp for upload or bump. Bumps are existing torrents that have been bumped to the front page for Projects, Daily fun like Jazz Sunday or Blues Monday, our man Hadrian occasionally will bump several artists on a birthday or anniversary of a birthday if they are playing at the great gig in the sky.

The right hand search box seems to do a better job than the left hand one, but you can experiment.

Depending upon your video settings and monitor size you may have to scroll horizontally to see the Submit button on the right side of the Torrents page.

Explore the drop down menus. Some artists with a lot of torrents here have their own entry on the Category menu.

The Projects menu is mostly for Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band projects. You can see everything that is available for a given year by picking a menu item. There is a better way to search both of those, we'll get to that shortly.

Guys and teams of transfer people who upload a lot here have their own Kind category.

The Type menu allows you to sort or filter by media and file types.

The Status menu has a bunch of things to experiment with. The biggest ones you will want are All My Grabs, which will show you your complete download history. The other is My Seeds Wanted. This will show you every show you have that needs a seeder. Once you build up a bank of shows it's very cool to check your My Seeds Wanted list daily, or whenever you roll in. Some of our guys who are around a lot check this list a few times a day and help seed whenever they can. We are grateful as those guys are a huge help and part of what makes this such a wonderful community.

Next to the Torrents link at the top of any page is the LL Lists link. There are menu choices for Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia. Pick whichever one you want, then pick a year, scroll the list for dates chronologically, pick a show, pick a source and each source has links to archive.org, db.etree.db, our details page, a direct download link, access to just the text file if you are just researching etc. The green check marks you see are shows that you have downloaded.

Both of these lists are home spun by one of our code gurus, Quimbo. They are masterful in every way and part of what makes LL the best place on the Net to find GD and Jerry shows.

Forum

The Forum link will take you to the forum home page. If searching the forum use the Search link on the navigation bar instead of the embedded search box. It seems to work a little better. Our forum search engine is not the best and don't be surprised if you have a hard time finding what you want. We all have trouble. The forums are chock full of sage advice, funny stuff and great music banter. The brain trust here is strong. If you have a question, one or more of our members is an expert in the field! We are generally friendly so don't be bashful about asking or using the shout box.

Speaking of the shout box. No discussion of politics EVER. No Religion and no swearing. Other than that knock yourself out.

You can also click any link to the current active threads in the forum on the left side of the main page.

The last person to post will be listed, you can click the name and see that person's forum profile. You can click the little (LL) next to it and go see their main site user profile which includes a partial list of the shows they have downloaded, the date they became a member, last login date and other fun stuff. We have no secrets here, everyone can see everyone else's profile.

Click a name in the who's online box and that will also take you to the person's profile page. The names in the shout box work the same way as well.

You can upload or attach files to any forum post. There is a limit of 4 files per post, with a max size for each file of 4 megabytes. If you upload more than one file the total of all files cannot exceed 4 megs. Allowable file types are jpeg, gif, png, txt, doc, docx.

You can also just paste any web site url into the forum and it will show as a clickable hot link. You can use the toolbar to link pictures or videos from other sites and do other fun stuff.

Links

The Links link. No it's not about golfing, we are poor hippies and don't have money for golf. I won't go through each item, you can explore on your own as you like.

The Chat area is not very active, if anyone wants to try to breath some life into Chat, go for it. We used to do listening parties one or two nights a week where guys would all cue up a show and listen together and jaw about it in the Chat room.

KT is Kevin Tobin, the video ace. His list is available for look'n'drool. If you see Kevin buy him a beverage, he has done an immense amount of work and sharing with the community.

NAB/NAV is the not allowed list. You will not find any torrents of those artists here. New members do not have upload permissions, but if you would like to upload we will gladly adjust your credentials as long as you have checked this list and agree to abide by it.

The biggest new thing to the policy is we are not allowing silver cd rips, ie - liberated boots anymore. There are many that are grandfathered but we prefer not to have any more of those as there are several other trackers where stuff like that is available.

Gizard.org/goother's hosting. Yours truly has a personal ftp server with some helpful and fun stuff. I move mp3's in and out a lot for friends who are not on the lossless wagon yet. Help yourself to any thing off the root folder. A lot of it is just sundry stuff, the most helpful folder you will want is this one, which has many of the programs we use to torrent, playback and work with encoding and decoding files. Foobar with shn plug-in, mp3 tag, Trader's Little Helper, utorrent 2.2.1 is what most of us use. It's not bloated like the newer utorrents and it does not have ads. If you use this, make sure to clear the auto update box in preferences immediately after installing the program. It's mostly geared for pc, but there may be a couple things for mac there as well.

The Members link allows you to search for other members as another way to access their profile pages.

News

Our man copperdomebohdi keeps us in the know with regularly updated news articles. Scroll all the way down the main page to see the most current, or click the News link on the top navigation bar.

Me

The Me link takes you to your profile where you can change password, change your profile language, the number of torrents per page which we usually set to 100. Set your time zone, Country etc.

Since we upgraded the forums a year ago there are parts of your profile that can be configured on the forum side and those will carry over to the main site.

So make sure to hit your forum profile and upload an avatar pic, configure your message inbox how you like it, etc.

If you get stuck or have questions about the forum please send a pm to goother

In the forum on the navigation bar hover your mouse over Profile. Check out the Account Settings and Forum Profile menu items. Those are where you can configure these additional things.

The Modify Profile > Look and Layout can help get your inbox just how you want it.

Torrent Blocks

There are 4 blocks or categories of the most recent and active torrents. Click the blue lettering at the top of any block and it will expand or compact the entire block. It's pretty neat and it's state dependent. Which simply means the site remembers how you had each block set the last time you were here. At least it supposed to. So if you are not a big Deadhead and don't care about the GD and family torrents, just compact that block. If you don't care about the express projects you can compact that one. The 4th block was being used as a temporary holding area for bringing shows over from archive.org. That project is done and another much more exciting project is going to hit soon and use that block.

Reseeds And Torrent Limits

Reseeds

We have implemented hard coded limits as of Jan 10, 2021. Valued Members may run 20 at a time, ALA/uploaders will be able to do 30. Active means loaded into your torrent program/client and running. How many other seeders or leechers has no bearing on that status. If it's running in your client, it's active as the site "sees" you. You will get strange behavior in your client program, error messages or have things turn red if you go over the limit.

There is one rule to rule them aLL. Be "ON" the torrent. By this we mean, DOWNLOAD THE TORRENT FILE FIRST. Do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars, do not do anything until you have the show running in your torrent program. Okay, you can eat a bag of chips but then download the .torrent file.

Reseed Request button and Reseed Forum thread procedures changed in late 2023 or early 2024. We now have several automated seed box type setups that fill seed requests and then when the leecher is done, they cut off the connection. These are handling about 80% of the Reseed requests. We also still have a team of great guys and gals who seed manually from their My Seeds Wanted list. At last count there were less than 1000 torrents here that could not be seeded. They're broken or hosed up enough that they don't work and will need to be replaced at some point. The vast majority of things you will get a seed fairly quickly. Things are running so smoothly that we decided to remove the Reseed Request buttons from the Details pages and we have locked the Reseed Forum thread. This thread is now locked, you cannot post there. Please read the last post as that has instructions for how to proceed if you don't get a seed after 24 hours.

https://www.shnflac.net/smf/index.php?topic=19437.0

To recap, download the .torrent file and wait. Once you are complete it is perfectly acceptable to bail. Stop and remove from your client. If you want to leave the show run for 24 to 48 hours that's fine. After that, please kill it. We don't keep track of ratio so there is no need to run shows for long periods trying to pad a ratio that we don't care about. Seed where you can on the front page new and bumped things that run for a few weeks, or use your My Seeds Wanted list and seed that way.

If you run a show that is idle or inactive for 3 months or longer there is a temporary ban that will kick in and you won't be able to see content until the ban is manually released by an admin. To find out what show/s have triggered the ban, click your name in the who's online box in the lower left margin. Or you can go to the Members link at the top of the main page and go there and search your name. You can also now use your My Profile link by your mailbox and then to the left on that next page is a link to your User Details. It's weird, there is a difference between your profile and details. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see a list of torrents that are triggering the ban. Stop and remove those from your client program and then post in the Forum thread when done so we can release the ban for you.

So that's it. Down the torrent file, get your show and don't linger for too long. If you have questions feel free to p.m. goother.

NAT Stuff

Being a good torrent citizen entails knowing at least a little bit about how it works and how to configure your programs, computer and router properly. NAT is the term we use to describe an improper setup. Google is your friend if you are curious what it means. LL has a component built into the tracker that looks at your NAT status. It's only about 50-60% accurate. We are not sure why it's not 100% accurate, and someday we hope to have some time to figure out why. If you go to an active torrent you have running and then click the little numbers, producing the seeders/leechers/peers page for that torrent you will see if you're listed as NAT/firewalled. If LL says you are NAT it doesn't mean that you for sure are, but it would be worth investigating on your end. NAT really only comes into play when you are seeding. The bit torrent programs have under-the-cover features that will usually allow a NAT person to download, it's the uploading that will not happen or happen very very slowly.

To be a good citizen at LL it's nice to seed back. Whether that is just staying on the active front page new and bumped torrents for longer, or seeding deep catalogue shows or non dead recordings is up to you. However, in order to seed, you need to be able to connect to another person's computer and upload data. If your torrent program, torrent computer and network (router) are not configured properly it's not going to work. Please research port forwarding and bit torrent configuration.

We realize that most people are not network administrators or even very tech savvy at all. That's fine, we have a bunch of information about the subject in the forums and faq. We also have an in-house admin who will help you get set up correctly.

If you look at a few forum posts and google a bit and say, "holy balls batman, this is beyond the scope of my technical understanding we have you covered. The forum thread for this is called NAT fix sign-up. Possibly one of the most creative titles for a thread ever! The link to it is here. https://www.shnflac.net/smf/index.php?topic=12008.0

Our very own NAT King-Cole, misujry, who volunteers his personal time to help people with this, has fixed hundreds of LLegs members over the last ten years. He is an honest, former Navy man who just enjoys helping people.

If you sign up for the NAT fix help, you will need to be diligent about looking for a pm or email from him and respond in a timely fashion. He generally likes to call on the phone and show people how to do this via the phone and some handy software that will allow him to remote access into your machine. It's a very small piece of software that will be uninstalled after he's done. But you have to be okay with the remote access and sharing your phone number. This is just the easiest way to do it, and he will show you on screen how to do it yourself if you need to in the future. It's fun and educational!

Lossless Legs would never put you or your computer's safety or security in jeopardy, so please rest assured after you uninstall the remote access software there is no way for misujry or anyone else to get into your machine.

Shout Box

You can post hot links to web sites, videos, pictures etc in the shout box. You can either post the link as a copy/paste and then people will need to do another copy/paste to go check it out.

If you would like to make a link hot, ie, clickable in the shout box, here's how.

Type then paste your link in

Simple html tags. The brackets must be the square kind and the trailing url thingy must have the forward slash. Do not use any spaces anywhere or it won't work.

There is not a lot of room in the shout box and we frown upon posting really long links.

If the link seems too long to fit on one line of the posting field for the shout box please use the web site tinyurl.com and that will convert your long link to something shorter. It's a cool free thing that allows you to customize what the link says too.

Their web site is http://tinyurl.com/

Directly to the right of the posting field is a smiley face emoji. Click that and you will get a page of more fun emojis to use. The little paper icon next to the smiley face is the shout box history. If you missed a day or two you can use that to catch up on the shout box banter if you like.

That's about it, again, if you have any questions feel free to ask in the forum, shout box or email goother at the signup address.

Have fun and happy jammin',

The LL admin team
